At the end of October 2024, 41-year-old Andrey Ivanov was working at a construction site in Ufa when a tinted Granta car pulled up to his car at lunchtime. Two men in balaclavas ran out; they pushed Andrey into their car and handcuffed him.

«They hit me on the sides, on the back and on the head. They said they would take me to the forest and bury me,» the man recalls.

Mr. Ivanov underlines that he was forced to confess to a murder committed 13 years ago; he was driven for a long time in an unknown direction, then — at the premises of the criminal investigation unit in Sterlitamak — beaten, threatened, tied up with a cable, hit with a stun gun and forced to confess to the murder. Andrey even showed the place where he allegedly buried the body, but apart from the remains of animals, nothing was found in that forest. Despite the absence of the body of the victim and any other evidence other than Ivanov’s confession, a criminal case was opened against the man. He is currently under house arrest.

For several months, Andrey and his lawyers have been trying to open another case — against the police officers who, according to Mr. Ivanov, beat him and forced him to confess to the murder. Recently, the lawyers received a medical report, according to which Mr. Ivanov had two broken ribs, damage to the tendon of his left shoulder, abrasions on his wrists and 20 electrical burns on his left foot.

Experts have established that the broken ribs could have been sustained during the period when the man was arrested and placed in the temporary detention cell. They also established that the injuries to the foot are characteristic of burns from a stun gun, as it is simply impossible to get such injuries from another source.

Following Andrey Ivanov’s complaint, the investigator conducted an inquiry and interviewed the police officers. Among them were the officers of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Fidan Nurgaleyev and Dinar Gabidullin, who had arrested Andrey. They told the investigator that they approached Ivanov, introduced themselves, but he started to run away, and they used force. However, the investigation materials contain recordings from street surveillance cameras that show that Ivanov was standing by his car and cleaning his shoes when the officers ran up to him, threw him to the ground and started beating him. The police officers who interrogated Ivanov at the police station said that no violence was used against him, and the man himself confessed to the murder. This interview with the officers was conducted before Ivanov’s injuries became known.

Lawyers, who represent Andrey’s interests, continue to insist on a more thorough inquiry and the opening of the relevant criminal case.
