Today the Russian Federation fulfilled its obligations towards brothers Gennadiy and Alexander Yankovsky from Orenburg region and paid them 150 and 30 thousand rubles as a compensation for police abuse to which they had been subjected in summer of 2004.

We would like to remind you that in October 2006 Novoorsk regional court of Orenburg region satisfied the claims of brothers Yankovsky against Russia for compensation of moral damages that arose due to the crime committed by a police officer.

Orenburg office of the Committee against Torture rendered the brothers legal assistance in course of trial and investigated the fact of the battery.

The investigation showed that at night on July 10-11, 2004, at the bank of Iriklinsky water reserve in Novoorsk region Sergey Kozhanov, a police officer from Novoorsk regional police department, battered Gennadiy and Alexander Yankovsky for no reason. As a result, the brothers got physical injuries: Gennadiy had serious injuries, Alexander – of moderate severity level.

The Prosecutor’s office initiated a criminal case against Kozhanov. On the 7th of July 2005 Novoorsk regional court sentenced the police officer to imprisonment for 4 years and 6 months, at present Sergey Kozhanov is serving his sentence.
