Yesterday the decision of the Yoshkar-Ola city court entered into force. In accordance with this judgment the Finance Ministry of Mariy-El is to pay 40 thousand rubles to ms. Irina Vinogradova who suffered from police abuse.

You may remember that Ms. Vinogradova initiated a suit claiming compensation of moral damage incurred by unlawful actions of the police officer who had battered her. The Yoshkar-Ola city court adjudicated in favour of Ms. Vinogradova and obliged the Finance Ministry of Mariy-El to pay her 40 thousand rubles out of local budget.

We would like to remind you also that earlier Ms.Vinogradova applied to the regional human rights organization “Man and Law” (Mariy-El). Specialists from the public investigation department together with the Committee against Torture conducted a public investigation of the fact of police abuse and managed to take Vinogradova’s case to court.

As it was stated by the Kilemar district court that had tried the torture case, Irina was detained in July 6, 2007 and taken to the police station by district police officer of Vizimyarskiy DPS Alexey Sharafutdinov. He took the lady to his office and started beating her without giving her the reason for detention and explaining nothing.

The Kilemar court found Mr. Sharafutdinov guilty and sentenced him to 4 years of suspended sentence on 4-year probation.
