Last Friday the Moskovsky district court of Nizhny Novgorod conducted the first hearing under the criminal case against police captain Sergey Kuzmenkov accused of abuse of office – beating Nizhny Novgorod resident Pavel Guryanov in the Moskovsky police department on 1 July 2010. The case is tried by federal judge Elena Goryunova.

You may remember that after the battery Guryanov applied to the investigation authorities and Interregional Committee Against Torture.

On 9 August 2010 criminal proceedings were instigated under Guryanov’s application on the allegations of abuse of office with violent treatment or a threat thereof and the use of weapon or special tools ( cl. «а», «b» p. 3 art. 286 of the RF Criminal Code).

The official inquiry and public investigation of the ICAT established that on 1 July 2010 the police had unlawfully detained Pavel Guryanov in his home. Then he was taken to police station no.4 of the Nizhny Novgorod Directorate of the Interior where he was cruelly beaten.

Specialists of the Committee Against Torture represented the applicant’s interests during the pre-trial investigation and will take part in the judicial proceedings.
