Today in Oktyabrskaya Hotel, specialists of the Committee against Torture conduct a training for workers of the Public Prosecutors Department (criminal prosecutors) of the Nizhny Novgorod regional Prosecutor’s office. The topic of the training is “Fair trial and the ECtHR case law: what a practicing lawyer should know”.

The training is devoted to the law and practice of the European Court of Human Rights under art. 6 of the European Convention (right to a fair trial). In the framework of this seminar regional prosecutors will learn about European Court standards both for Russia and other member states. Besides, it is supposed to study some case law judgments.

Today’s seminar is the first one with the participation of Prosecutor’s office workers. Earlier the Committee against Torture conducted similar trainings for lawyers. The prosecutor’s office administration got interested in the seminars of the Committee, and Mr. Maxim Ignatov, head of the Public Prosecutors Department, applied to the Committee against Torture with a request to conduct a training. The Committee staff promptly responded to the striving of the Prosecutor’s office to learn more about such important issues in the practice of human rights protection as European Court case law and standards. Today’s training is the manifestation of mutual interest of the Committee and regional Prosecutor’s office in beneficial cooperation.

This training forms part of the project “Monitoring and education as a means to prevent tortures in Nizhny Novgorod region” supported by the Global Opportunities Fund of the UK Foreign Office.
