The official web-page of the European Court of Human Rights announces that on Thursday, October 7, the verdict under the case of Alaudin Sadykov will be proclaimed.

You may remember that the regional representation of the Committee Against Torture in Chechnya conducted a public investigation under Sadykov’s application which revealed a breach of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

On March 5, 2000 pensioner Alaudin Sadykov was detained by servicemen of the federal forces.

He was taken to the school building which housed the Temporary Department of Internal Affair of the Oktyabrsky district of Grozny.  There Sadykov was kept for three months. During that period he was not provided any procedural document, could not see a lawyer, did not have a chance to complain to court or law enforcement bodies. 

During his detention Alaudin was cruelly tortured. For instance, a state agent burnt his palm through with a red-hot iron rod. Besides, the authorities knocked out Mr. Sadykov’s teeth and broke him several ribs. They also cut off his left ear.   

The prosecutor’s office opened criminal proceedings in connection with the described events. However, the investigation did not lead to the restoration of Alaudn’s rights. Perpetrators were not punished.

Mr. Sadykov applied to the European Court of Human Rights. At the beginning of February 2009 the ICAT was notified that the ECtHR had rendered the application “Sadykov v. Russia” admissible.
