Alexander Solomonovich Gorelik deceased

Today 75-year old doctor of legal sciences, professor, corresponding member of the Siberian Department of the Academy of Science, head of Criminal Law and Criminology School of Krasnoyarsk State University Alexander Solomonovich Gorelik died. Alexander Gorelik was widely known for his active involvement into human rights protection in Russia and abroad. He was one of the founders and chairman of the Public Committee for Human Rights Protection. Alexander Gorelik took part in numerous conferences and seminars on human rights protection in Russia and abroad, in particular, he represented human rights organizations at the OSCE conference in Vienna (1999) and UN Committee against Torture session in Geneva (2002). Upon the request of the Council of Europe he dealt with scientific editing of “Human Rights and Police” in Russian translation (2002).

Alexander Gorelik was awarded a medal “For valorous labour during the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945”, anniversary medals and a “Labour Veteran” medal, he got an honorary title of “Distinguished Lawyer of the Russian Federation”.

The Committee against Torture knew Alexander Gorelik as a profound expert in criminal law and human rights protection. In 2001 the Committee had a chance to cooperate with him, and we can say that Alexander Gorelik was really professional in his field. We appreciate it greatly that we had a chance to work together.
