On the 1st and 2nd of November within the framework of the “Monitoring and Training as a Means to Prevent Tortures in Nizhny Novgorod Region” project the Committee against Torture organizes a training for lawyers of Nizhny Novgorod region. The seminar topic is “The European Court of Human Rights Law and Practice”.
The new project of the Committee against Torture aims at supporting Russian civil society in the context of human rights culture development, rule of law promotion, freedom of expression support. The Committee against Torture hopes that will contribute to the human rights culture development within the legal community, including state representatives. The project leads to a better understanding of the problem of human rights protection, will help to develop an approach to international practice application within the national law enforcement and legal systems. New interpretation of the concept of human rights and information about European standards for human rights protection will give practicing lawyers a possibility to improve their skills, update and more efficiently apply their legal practice.
This training is the first in a series of trainings for practicing lawyers organized by the Committee under this project. The organizers invited two well-known trainers for this event:
Vladimir Luzin (Russia) – PhD in law, member of the “Legal Initiative Programme” set up by the Open Society Foundation, practicing lawyer representing applicants’ interests in the European Court of Human Rights.
Lutz Oette (Great Britain) – REDRESS Trust Project Coordinator for national implementation and capacity building, he undertook a comprehensive analysis of the laws and practices relating to reparation for torture in 31 countries, reflecting different regions and legal systems of the world. For several years he has worked as a Coordinator for Bangladesh, Georgia, Iraq, Russia, Sri Lanka and Sudan. He is a practicing lawyer who has worked with more than 30 cases in the European Court of Human Rights.
The Committee against Torture hopes that this project will help to develop the human rights culture in Nizhny Novgorod region.
