Today the Tuymazy district court of Bashkiria delivered a judgment in respect of two district police officers who had battered a minor student, Ruslan Tangayev. The Multiregional Committee against Torture, where the student’s parents had applied, conducted an investigation upon their application, provided for Ruslan’s medical rehabilitation in Nizhny Novgorod and pressed for initiation of a criminal case against the police officers. The district court sentenced each indictee to 2.5 years conditionally on 1-year probation. The court maintained that police officers Farrakhov and Gabdrakhmanov were guilty under cl. а p. 3 art. 286 of the RF Criminal Code (Excess of official powers with violent treatment) and p. 1 art. 285 of the RF Criminal Code (abuse of official powers). Besides, police officers were charged under art. 292 (forgery by an official). However, they were not punished for that crime because the prosecution period expired until the preliminary investigation and hearings were finished.
