On 1 February 2010 the Avtozavodsky district court will start hearing the case of police abuse in respect of Mr. Lebedev. Judge Vladimir Vinnitsky will be the chairman. Stanislav Lebedev will be represented by his lawyer and workers of the Committee against Torture.

You may remember that 19-year old Stanislav Lebedev applied to the Committee against Torture after he was battered by officers of the Avtozavodsky district Directorate of the Interior. This happened at night on 8 March 2009. According to Stanislav, officers of the 2nd police department of that district beat him up for no reason. The following day Stanislav was taken to clinical hospital no.40. Upon admittance and before the surgery he was examined by doctors who found the following injuries:  blunt-force abdominal injury, extraperitoneal hemorrhage and rupture of the left kidney. The doctors had to remove the struck off kidney.

Lawyers of the Committee against Torture complained about Mr. Lebedev’s battery to the Avtozavodsky district Prosecutor’s Office. Only after that the Investigation Committee under the Avtozavodsky district Prosecutor’s Office started a criminal case under art. 111, 286 of the RF Criminal Code (intended bodily harm and abuse of office).
