Today, the City Court of Shali (the Chechen Republic) rejected the relevant motion for Zarema’s parole — that decision was adopted by judge Ruslan Movlayev. Mr. Movlayev agreed with the arguments of the state prosecution and the correctional colony, as they believe that the goals of the punishment were not achieved and Zarema Musayeva should not be released.

The judge also read out an objection to the woman’s early release from “OTP BANK” — its representative acted as a victim in Ms. Musayeva’s criminal case for fraud. The bank has requested not to grant her parole, since Ms. Musayeva «did not take any steps to repay the damage inflicted.» According to Zarema’s attorney, Aleksandr Savin, this document came as a surprise to him.

Mr. Savin notes the following:

«It remains a mystery to me what amount of compensation to that bank we are talking about, since the bank has not previously announced any damage. It turns out that the bank wants to return to the trial of the first instance court and declare the harm caused, as well as to lodge a separate civil claim against Zarema. However, at present, when the court decides on the parole motion, such a request is legally impossible.»

Zarema Musayeva is serving a sentence on charges of fraud and assault on a police officer. The woman has type 2 insulin-dependent diabetes, her condition is constantly getting worse, she needs quality treatment, which she does not receive in the correctional facility. Zarema’s term of imprisonment ends in June 2025; the attorney’s next opportunity to apply for parole will only appear in six months.
