In this way the Leninskiy District Court of Orenburg has decided on Ms. Pikalova’s claim against the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs. The woman demanded 3 and a half million rubles as non-pecuniary damage, so now she plans to challenge the District Court’s decision.

In May 2010, Larisa Pikalova, along with her friends, ended up at the police station on suspicion of a series of thefts. They denied their involvement in the crimes, but the police officers Ivan Kudinov, Denis Fyodorov and Sergey Kornilov beat them and forced them to incriminate themselves. Subsequently, doctors diagnosed the detainees with multiple injuries; Ms. Pikalova had bruises, abrasions, a closed head injury, and a concussion.

In 2011, the investigation, having established that all three suspects did not commit the crimes they confessed to, discontinued any criminal prosecution. Only in May 2022, that is, 12 years later, the ex-officers were found guilty, but were released from punishment due to the expiration of the statute of limitations. When sentencing, the judge noted the «particular cruelty and sadism» of the crime.

The commentary of the Crew Against Torture: «There are three victims in this case, and not all court hearings on compensation for non-pecuniary damage have taken place yet. However, the authorities have already been ordered to pay the victims more than one and a half million rubles, including for delaying the investigation and unlawful criminal prosecution.»
