Zarema Musayeva has experienced severe swelling and her eyesight has drastically deteriorated. This was evidenced by Zarema’s attorney, Mr. Aleksandr Savin, who visited her in the colony-settlement of the city of Argun. Zarema indicated that in the hospital where she had recently been admitted, she was diagnosed with eye cataracts. In addition, she was prescribed new medications as the old ones no longer helped fight the consequences of her chronic disease (Zarema has insulin-dependent type 2 diabetes).

The attorney also notes the following: «Zarema informed me that her eyesight dropped quite quickly. It began to get worse and worse and by the time she was hospitalized she could only see silhouettes. Besides, she has severe pain behind her right knee. Currently, Ms. Musayeva takes painkillers. The causes of these pains have not been diagnosed yet, but Zarema expects that at the end of this week she will be taken back to the hospital, where appropriate examinations are to be carried out.»

In December 2023, Mr. Savin filed a motion with the Shali City Court to release Zarema from custody due to her poor health condition. For several months now, the seriously ill woman has not been given the medical examination which is necessary for the court’s assessment of the mentioned motion. However, as Mr. Savin underlines, there is still a chance that the examination would take place in the near future, as the court has repeatedly sent relevant requests to the colony-settlement, the Chechen Penitentiary Service and the prosecutor’s office.
