– “Novaya Gazeta” and the Committee Against Torture received the Sakharov Award for outstanding efforts for eliminating torture in Russia, – pointed out Secretary General of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee Bjørn Engesland.

“Lawyers with the Committee Against Torture won and continue to win more and more cases in the Russian courts. In the process of revealing human rights violators they refer to the Russian legislation, thus contributing to strengthening of belief in justice and efficiency of independent institutions in the country. “Novaya Gazeta” journalists expose outrageous cases of brutal treatment and publish independent news in the country where the state propaganda and assaults against the critical journalism are widely spread”, – Helsinki Norwegian Committee website emphasizes.
