The Federal Registration Service of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation has issued a new registration certificate to the Nizhny Novgorod Regional NGO Committee Against Torture which henceforth has become the “Interregional NGO Committee Against Torture”. Thus, the efforts of human rights defenders who strived for this new status were rewarded. It means that now the Committee has gained the right to work actively in different regions of Russia and set up full-fledged offices there, increasing thereby the effectiveness of work on protection of human rights, freedoms and lawful interests. This qualitatively new status of the Committee opens up greater opportunities and will help intensify its activities aiming to eliminate torture and cruel treatment, expand the area of work, and increase the number of Russian citizens applying to the Committee.    

    At present the Committee Against Torture, apart from Nizhny Novgorod region, has its offices in the Chechen Republic, Orenburg region, the Republic of Bashkortostan and the Republic of Mari-El.
