A resident of Nizhny Novgorod is compensated for tortures in the Balakhna police

Today, Dmitry Mezheninov from Nizhny Novgorod has received 10 000 rubles awarded to him earlier by the Nizhegorodsky district court of Nizhny Novgorod. The compensation was awarded for the crime committed by the police in respect of Mezheninov. Earlier Mr. Mezheninov had applied to the Interregional Committee Against Torture which managed to make the investigation authorities instigate criminal proceedings upon the fact of Dmitry’s abuse by officers Sermavbrin and Shapovalov from Balakhna.  

   On 21 November 2008 the verdict was pronounced. The defendants were found guilty. Andrey Sermavbrin was convicted under p.3, cl. “a”, Article 286 of the RF Criminal Code and sentenced to 3 years of imprisonment, the sentence was suspended.  Konstantin Shapovalov was convicted under p.3, cl. “a”, “b”, Article 286 of the RF Criminal Code and sentenced to 4 years of imprisonment in a standard security penal colony.

   When the verdict entered into force, the ICAT initiated civil proceedings which resulted in compensation of moral damage inflicted by police abuse to Mr. Mezheninov.
