On May 27, 2008 the Lyskovo district court of Nizhny Novgorod region will adjudicate on the case of tortures in IK-16 penal colony. The court hearing was appointed on April 30 after the investigation and debates of the parties were over.

The judicial investigation found out that colony worker Mr. Martynov had savagely battered prisoner Karpov who could not stand the tortures and tried to commit suicide by jumping off the barracks roof.
It should be mentioned that during the debates the state prosecutor demanded that the accused should be sentenced to 6.5 years of imprisonment.
At present the Committee against Torture where Mr. Karpov applied for help is granting him legal aid and provides a lawyer.
