Today the Lyskovo district court of Nizhny Novgorod region voiced the verdict under the case of Sergey Karpov. You may remember that the accused, Mr. Martynov, worker of the IK-16 penal colony, was charged with excess of powers with violent treatment (cl. “a”, p.3 of art.286 of the RF Criminal Code) as well as incitement to suicide (art.110 of the RF CC).Mr. Martynov was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months of imprisonment in a standard security penal colony.

According to the Committee lawyers who represent Mr.Karpov’s interests, the sentence fully conforms to the severity of the crime. We hope that this important sentence pertaining to case law will teach a good lesson to those who violate human rights in penal institutions.

The personnel of the prosecutor’s office supervising penal institutions did their best to hold Mr. Martynov liable. We would like to emphasize the contribution of Mr. Safronov, the state prosecutor, who stuck to his position and supported the prosecution in court.

You may remember that the judicial investigation revealed that penal colony worker Martynov had savagely battered prisoner karpov in order to make him join the discipline and order workshop. As a result Mr. Karpov could not stand the humiliation and tried to commit suicide by jumping off the barracks roof.

It is worth saying that in course of debates the state prosecution representative demanded to sentence the accused to 6.5 years of imprisonment.
