On July 23, 2010 the Yoshkar-Ola city court of Mariy El heard the civil suit filed by the deceased policeman’s father and brother. The court awarded the father – Anatoly Lebedev – 280 000 rubles, and brother – Nikolay – 250 000 rubles as compensation of moral damage to be paid by the Mariy El Finance Ministry.  

In June 2010 a similar amount was paid to the mother of the killed officer – the court had awarded her 280 000 rubles.

At night on 4-5 July 2008 at the Rubezh police check point located on the border of Mariy El and Tatarstan major Mikhailov who was on duty started shooting at his colleagues, killed his mate, lieutenant Dmitry Lebedev, and wounded duty officer Turanov from the Volzhsk Department of Internal Affairs. Mr. Lebedev’s relatives applied to the Mariy El representation of the Interregional Committee Against Torture and Regional NGO “Man and Law”.  The human rights defenders conducted a public investigation, the CAT staff represented the victims in court.

On July 24, 2010 the Mariy El Supreme Court convicted senior traffic police inspector of the Volzhsk department of Internal Affairs Vasily Mikhailov under p. 1 art. 105 (murder), and p. 3 art. 30, cl. «а» p. 2 art. 105 (attempted murder) of the RF Criminal Code. The court sentenced Vasily Mikhailov to 15 years of imprisonment in an increased security penal colony.
