20 May 2008

Today the Blagoveschensk district court (Bashkiria) sentenced Mr. S.Fomin, police officer (dog-handler) from the local department of Internal Affairs, who, as the Committee against Torture earlier reported, was charged under cl. “a,b”, p.3 of article 286 of the RF Criminal Code (excess of official powers with violent treatment and special tools application).
The court found the police officer guilty and sentenced him to 3 years conditionally on 1-year probation. Moreover, Mr. Fomin cannot serve in state bodies for 1 year. We received this information from Mr. Vladislav Sadykov, head of the Bashkirian office of the Committee against Torture, who represented the victim’s interests in court.
It is worth mentioning that it is the Multiregional Committee against Torture that since 2004 has been granting legal support to all citizens declared victims under criminal cases connected to the special police operation in Blagoveschensk.
