Director of the Sormovsky cemetery Mikhail Skobelev applied to INGO “Committee Against Torture” a year ago.

According to Mr. Skobelev, in 2009 on Police Day he was beaten by unknown people in a parking lot. Later, when the Internal Security Directorate of the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Directorate of the Interior was performing a check, Skobelev recognized the perpetrators, those were officers of the Sormovsky District Economic Crimes Department.

For more than a year investigator Chirkunova from the Sormovsky Investigation Department had been protracting the investigation into the allegations of Skobelev’s beatings.

When mass media reported about the situation around the investigation, the heads of the Investigation Administration of the Investigation Committee for Nizhny Novgorod region requested the case file for a check and investigator Chirkunova quit the job.

At present, an additional check is being conducted by investigator Alexey Ermakov from the Special Investigation Department of the Investigation Administration of the Investigation Committee under the RF Prosecutor’s Office for Nizhny Novgorod region.

The Committee Against Torture is going to monitor the official check and press for instigation of criminal proceedings.
