The Interregional Committee Against Torture has stopped working with the application of Igor Veselov (Sarov, Nizhny Novgorod region) as the applicant has withdrawn his claim and rejected further assistance.

At the beginning of October 2010 the ICAT received an application from Veselov’s mother, claiming that her son had been beaten by officers of the Federal Security Service Directorate for Nizhny Novgorod region on 19 September 2010.

Mr. Veselov located in remand prison SIZO-1 in Nizhny Novgorod confirmed the information to the ICAT lawyer promptly sent to visit him.

The CAT started checking the allegations, in particular, it began searching for witnesses and questioning them, sent a corresponding application to the military investigation authorities and reported about Veselov’s application to mass media.

However, Mr. Veselov preferred not to wait for the results of the check and officially declined further cooperation with the Committee by withdrawing his application.

He has not mentioned the reasons for doing so.

Therefore, the Interregional Committee Against Torture stops any activity under Veselov’s application.
