The Committee Against Torture takes part in an international conference on the North Caucasus in Stockholm

On 19 – 23 November 2011 the Committee Against Torture will take part in the international conference “The Stockholm Process: Strengthening Human Rights Defenders In The North Caucasus”, Stockholm, Sweden.
   The conference is organized by Сivil Rights Defenders with the support of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and is devoted to human rights activities in the North Caucasus. The event will be attended by international and local human rights defenders, donor organizations working in the North Caucasus.
   The conference will cover such topics as organizing the work of Joint Mobile Groups in the region, problems and needs associated with trial observation in the North Caucasus. Chairman of the Interregional Committee Against Torture Igor Kalyapin will deliver his report “The Joint Mobile Group and its development, can we use its experience and methodology in other Republics?” We would like to remind you that the Joint Mobile Group of Russian human rights defenders in Chechnya was created in 2009 and is coordinated by the Committee Against Torture.

  The conference will also touch upon the issues of possible changes in the human rights situation in the North Caucasus, as well as coming elections and 2014 Olympic games in Sochi.
   Besides, the participants will discuss proposals of organizations regarding their contributions to the Stockholm process, as well as ways to enhance security of human rights defenders in the North Caucasus.
