The Orenburg Regional Prosecutor’s Office has officially informed the NN Committee Against Torture that officials of the Mednogorsk City Prosecutor’s Office (a senior investigator and the deputy prosecutor) were called to account for improper discharge of duty. The Prosecutor of Mednogorsk was strongly rebuked for weak control over his subordinates. This became possible after the Orenburg Office of the NN Committee Against Torture had submitted a statement of human rights defenders to the General Prosecutor’s Office of Russia concerning violations committed by the above officials during the investigation of a case of death of one of the citizens.

The NN Committee Against Torture believes that proper response of higher prosecutors to violations committed by prosecution officials is the most important preventive measure which ensures legality and increases responsibility of prosecution officials.
