Today the criminal division of the Nizhny Novgorod region court tried the cassation appeal former IK-16 penal colony staff Mr. Martynov who had been charged with excess of official powers with violent treatment (cl. “a”, p.3 art. 286 of the RF Criminal Code) as well as with incitement to suicide (art. 110 of the RF CC).

Mr. Martynov was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in a standard security penal colony.

The cassation instance of the regional court left the judgment unaltered and it entered into force.

Victim Karpov was satisfied with the sentence. Lawyers of the Committee against Torture will help him to lodge a claim for compensation of damage.

You may remember that the official investigation proved that colony worker Martynov had brutally battered prisoner Karpov in order to make him enter the Discipline and Order workshop. As a result, Mr. Karpov could not stand the humiliation and tried to commit suicide by jumping off the barracks roof.
