Today the judgment delivered by the Sechenovo district court of Nizhny Novgorod region entered into force. By this judgment three former district police officers were found guilty of torturing Mr. Gennadiy Denisov, a pensioner.
You may remember that the case of Gennadiy Denisov who had been battered by the police in 2004 was investigated by specialists of the Multiregional Committee against Torture. Thanks to the efforts of the Committee, the three policemen were taken to court.
On 21 december 2007 the Sechenovo district court chaired by federal judge Ilyas Kotdusov found former acting head of the Sechenovo pilice department Ilham Aymaletdinov guilty under cl.”a”, part 3 of art.286 of the RF Criminal Code (excess of powers with violent treatment) and p.1 of art.285 (abuse of official powers). Mr. Aymaletdinov was sentenced to 4 years 2 months in a standard security penal colony.
Indictees Sergeyev and Shakirov were found guilty under cl.”a”, part 3 of art.286 of the RF Criminal Code, and both were sentenced to 3 years 2 months in a standard security penal colony.
Mr. Sergeyev, Mr.Shakirov and Mr. Aymaletdinov appealed against the verdict to the cassation instance. The policemen still claimed they had not tortured Mr.Denisov. But their cassation appeal was not satisfied. The criminal division of the Nizhny Novgorod regional court confirmed the judgment delivered in Sechenovo.
