THE JUDGMENT TO THE LYSKOVO PENAL COLONY OFFICER WILL BE DELIVERED ON MAY 27

On May 27, 2008 the Lyskovo district court of Nizhny Novgorod region will adjudicate on the case dealing with tortures in penal colony IK-16. Such decision was made on April 30 when the investigation and pleadings of the parties were over.

You may remember that Mr. Martynov, staff member of in IK-16, is charged under article 110 of the RF Criminal Code (“Incitement to suicide”) and cl. “a”, part 3 of art.286 of the RF CC (“excess of official powers with violent treatment”).

In course of judicial investigation it turned out that Mr. Martynov had savagely battered prisoner Karpov who could not stand the humiliation and tried to commit suicide by jumping off the barracks roof.

It is worth mentioning that when making their pleadings the state prosecutor demanded to sentence the accused to 6.5 years in a penal colony.

At present the Committee against Torture where Mr. Karpov turned for help grants him comprehensive legal aid, including provision of a lawyer.

The Committee against Torture invites the mass media to be present at the court hearing when the judgment is pronounced.
