That was the decision taken yesterday by the Sechenovo District Court of Nizhny Novgorod region, although the applicant had claimed 1 million rubles.

Yesterday the Sechenovo District Court of Nizhny Novgorod region finished hearing the suit claiming compensation of moral damage incurred by police abuse. The suit was filed by lawyers of the Committee against Torture in the interests of Gennady Denisov from Sechenovo. In April 2004 Mr. Denisov had been cruelly battered by agents of the local Directorate of the Interior. Rights after that Gennady applied for help to the Committee against Torture. Thanks to the efforts of the CAT lawyers, the case reached the court. Three police officers in charge of tortures were sentenced to imprisonment. In May 2009 Denisov lodged a civil suit claiming 1000000 rubles to be paid by the RF Finance Ministry as compensation of moral damage.
Yesterday the court partially sustained the claim. Now the RF Finance Ministry and the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Finance Ministry are to pay 30 000 rubles to Mr. Denisov jointly.
Mr. Denisov is not satisfied with the decision and intends to appeal against it, however he is skeptical about the positive outcome – the reason is that it has taken the Sehcenovo court more than 10 months to try the first suit.
