The sentence on policemen who ill-treated Genady Denisov has been passed

Yesterday the Sechenovo District Court (the Nizhny Novgorod region) passed the sentence under the criminal case against three policemen of the Sechenovo district police station (ROVD). Policemen I. Aymaletdinov, A. Sergeev and S. Shakirov were accused of the unlawful use of physical force against Gennady Denisov.

According to the decision of the court presided by federal judge Ilyas Kotdusov, former acting head of the Sechenovo ROVD Ilkham Aymaletdinov was found guilty of the crime under Article 286 para. 3 (a) of the Russian Criminal Code (Exceeding official powers associated with the use of violence). In addition Mr Aymaletdinov was found guilty under Article 285 para. 1 of the Criminal Code (Abuse of official powers). Ilkham Aymaletdinov was sentenced to four years and two months imprisonment in a minimum-security colony.

Mr Sergeev and Mr Shakirov were found guilty of the crime under Article 286 para. 3 (a) of the Criminal Code. Both of them were sentenced to three years and two months imprisonment in a minimum-security colony.

After the judge pronounced the sentence, Gennady Denisov and his wife stated that they were very pleased with it and happy that justice had at last triumphed.

The Committee Against Torture where in due time the victim had applied to made every effort to refer this case to court and continues to provide Gennady Denisov with legal assistance. Yuri Sidorov, a lawyer of the Committee, represented the victim’s interests before the court. The Public Verdict Foundation (Moscow) has also greatly contributed to providing advocacy.
