Today the cassation instance of the Supreme Court of Bashkiria has heard the appeal of the RF Finance Ministry represented by the Federal Treasury Administration for the Republic of Bashkiria against the decision of the Leninsky district court of Ufa awarding 70 thousand rubles to Samvel Rafaeli Alaverdyan as compensation of damage inflicted to him during the notorious police “mopping-up” in December 2004.

The appeal has been dismissed and the first instance judgment has entered into force. Lawyers of the Bashkirian representation of the Committee Against Torture represented Mr. Alaverdyan’s interests in court.

Having listened to the arguments of Mr. Alaverdyan’s representative, specialist of the Committee Against Torture, about substantive violation of the claimant’s rights inflicting moral damage to him, the civil division of the Supreme Court of Bashkiria dismissed the appeal and upheld the initial judgment.

The Committee Against Torture continues providing legal assistance to victims of the special police operation in Blagoveschensk.
