Together against torture! The Committee Against Torture observes the United Nations International day in Support of Victims of Torture

On 26 June the world will commemorate the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture for the 14th time.

On this day146 countries organize different events to demonstrate that torture is unacceptable, to support victims of torture and cruel treatment, to tell the public about available mechanisms of human rights and legal interests protection.

The Interregional Committee Against Torture is an organization that has been persistently fighting torture in

Russia on a professional level for more than ten years.

On 25 – 26 June 2010 the ICAT will conduct a series of activities in different Russian regions to mark this date:

On 25 June 2010 the Chechen representation of the Interregional Committee Against Torture will hold a press-conference attended by representation head Supyan Baskhanov in the office of IA “Grozny-Info”.

In Ufa on June 25 at 14.00 there will be a press-conference of Vladislav Sadykov, head of the Bashkirian representation of the ICAT, in the editorial office of Komsomolskaya Pravda. 

In Nizhny Novgorod on June 26, at 12.00 in Teatralnaya Square there will be a picket devoted to the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.  

In Yoshkar-Ola on June 26, at 11.00 human rights defenders will meet in the city centre, in Chayvana Boulevard to organize an action “Together against torture!”.

There will be a picket in Orenburg, staff of the Orenburg office of the Committee Against Torture and relatives of torture victims will gather near the Pushkin Monument at 11.00 on Saturday, June 26.

It should be noted that by ratifying the UN Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment the Russian Federation has rendered such human rights violations unacceptable in its territory and de facto approved the activities aimed at eliminating this problem.  

The Interregional Committee Against Torture invites all Russian citizens who are not indifferent to the problem of tortures and police abuse and representatives of free mass media to take part in the activities on June 26.
